Much of Vienna lives in Altbau buildings from the Gründerzeit, with old risers, galvanised pipes and wall-hung gas combi boilers (Therme) in the kitchen or bathroom. Typical call-outs are blocked drains, leaking siphons, dripping taps and boilers that stop working when the heating season starts in October. Plumbing, heating and gas work in Austria is a regulated trade (Installateur), so the plumber needs a valid Gewerbe licence, which you can check in the public GISA register.

In rented flats, the Hausverwaltung is often responsible for risers and shared pipes, so it is worth informing them before work starts.

Typical prices in Vienna About 73 to 113 EUR per working hour on weekdays plus travel; nights, Sundays and holidays considerably more

Indicative range seen on the local market, not a quote. The final price depends on the job and is agreed directly with the plumber before work starts.

    Plumbing questions in Vienna

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Vienna?

A survey by the Vienna Chamber of Labour (AK Wien) found plumber rates of roughly 73 to 113 EUR per working hour on weekdays, plus travel time or a travel flat rate. Emergency services at night, on Sundays and public holidays cost considerably more. Always ask for the full price before work starts.

My gas boiler (Therme) stopped working, what should I do?

Check the water pressure gauge and whether the boiler shows an error code. If you smell gas, leave the flat and call the gas emergency number 128 straight away. Gas appliances must only be repaired by a licensed Installateur.

Who pays for the repair in a rented flat?

It depends on your contract and the Mietrechtsgesetz. Shared pipes and risers are usually the building's responsibility, while small parts inside the flat can be the tenant's. Contact your Hausverwaltung if unsure.

Why do taps in Vienna still get limescale?

Vienna's mountain spring water is fairly soft, but some districts also receive groundwater, which is harder. Over time aerators, shower heads and boilers still build up some limescale, so regular descaling and a yearly boiler service help.

A leak, a blockage, no hot water?

Describe the problem in two minutes. A local plumber calls you back and agrees the price before any work.
